Compelling flash essays capture dramatic moments in our lives, which leave lasting impressions like a shooting star or a meteor strike. Flash essays are concise and contain profound revelations. This writing-intensive course will deepen your appreciation of this innovative genre. We will experiment with story structure, drawing inspiration from narrative and hermit crab essays, and launch into our own. Everyone will have an opportunity to share and receive feedback. Writers of all levels are welcome.

Step into one of the most exciting genres in contemporary literature: creative nonfiction. Drawing inspiration from life’s ups and downs and the vast landscape of in-betweens, we will read and write personal essays. Each week, we will focus on different elements of craft, exploring topics fundamental to compelling essays, such as persona and narrative arcs. Students can develop one or several essays. Everyone will have an opportunity to workshop at least twice. Writers of all levels are welcome. We will come together in an encouraging and supportive space.

To write compelling true stories (nonfiction), you need to familiarize yourself with the basics of imaginative writing (creative), including character, voice, exposition, plot, imagery, and detail. We will read memoir excerpts, personal essays, flash, and micro-essays to gain a deeper appreciation of this innovative genre. The class includes guided writing prompts and discussion. This session provides an overview of the genre and is ideal for anyone considering enrolling in one of my multi-week workshops, Writing in Curves or In Short: The Art of Flash Essay.
